Give a Right Makeover to your Home Interiors with these Painting Tips and Ideas

We may not realize, but different colors affect differently the activities and emotions of people. For instance, warm colors such as Red, Orange or Blue re-energize the surroundings and stimulate the feelings of the onlookers as these colors are associated with strong feelings whilst cool colors such as Sea Green, Yellow, etc. have a soothing effect on the psyche of the people. Whereas White color is associated with spirituality, peace and tranquility; the color Black can have an almost opposite impact leaving the viewer feeling disturbed and distressed.

So painting your home, especially the interiors design and giving it the right makeover require meticulous selection of colors to be able transform an otherwise mundane place into an invigorating one. If need be, hire or consult a professional to help you in your painting project. Else digital pictures of the room can be taken to try and test different colors and also to determine the right color scheme for the walls. Always remember that light colors can be used anywhere, but with dark colors one needs to be little more conscious as these can complement only such interiors design of a room that consist of multiple windows and have a free flow of natural light. For instance, if you want to paint your basement with dark colors, it will end up transforming the basement into a gloomy and dingy place.

Then, same color with different effects can also be given a thought – mostly used in attached rooms – that are left open to each other. Another ingenious way to lend a statement to the passage; let’s say while crossing the doorway – bold contrast can be used which leaves a perfect finish to the interiors design. If you want to be playful and artistic, then might as well think of a wall mural to give a personalized touch!

In order to yield better results, priming the walls become mandatory especially when you want to give new finish to the wall which is already painted with a dark shade or in case a new dry wall is to be painted. There is a whole range of variety available in primers, but latex, oil and shellac are the main ones. They are used to serve three chief functions, viz. to remove stains and prevent the wall from bleeding through; secondly, to allow the home paint coverage of one coat; and thirdly but most importantly to improve paint adhesion for reducing the marks of peeling and blisters.

However, home paints that contain primers are also widely available in the market these days, but nothing works better than a dedicated primer itself. Before the application of primers, it is advisable to clean the surface properly and leave it to dry. Even though it acts as an initial layer of coating, it helps in bringing the desired result after home paint and gives a long-lasting finish.

Sheen is yet another important facet of home painting as the kind of finish you’d choose for your paint will bear a major impact on the looks of your wall. With these options – Satin, gloss and egg shell – several considerations need to be taken care of.  In case of high traffic regions, satin or gloss finish give excellent results as they give a cleaner look and require easy maintenance. But these finishes fall short of one quality, i.e. they don’t act as concealers and make such regions as patched walls, wavy drywall much more prominent. A matte-like finish, on the other hand, will effectively cover up these imperfections, but is impervious to cleaning and touches. Flat enamel paint comes with durable flat-matte finish that is perfect for living rooms and big walls. It requires occasional cleaning.

If you want neither something too glossy nor completely matte; then egg shell finish can be an ideal choice as there will be a subtle gloss or shine which will hold up better results.

Besides all the above mentioned elements, it is also important to select the top-quality equipment for the application of paint to achieve consistent and long-lasting finish. High-quality equipment not only gives a more consistent and firm look to the walls, but also simplifies the whole process thereby pacing up your work. Following are the general guidelines that can be followed during your home painting project:

Different Variety of Brushes

In particular, there are two types of brushes available in the market – one made up of synthetic materials, such as polyester or nylon and the other made up of natural-hair bristles. If you are applying any type of latex coating, then brushes with synthetic bristles should be used and for oil-based paints you can use any of the brush. The best part of the top-quality brushes is that their bristles remain firm and stiff despite being exposed to too much water. If they are properly kept after use, they ensure uniform working for many years to come.

As there are brushes in different sizes, you need to select the right size in order to get the best possible application on the walls of your home. For instance, if you want to paint the walls and ceilings, then brush between 3’’ and 4’’ wide should be used. Moreover, to cut the corners of the walls, brushes with tapered edges, i.e. 2’’ wide will be most suitable.

Choosing Paint Rollers

For easier application and faster results, it is advisable to use paint rollers which work excellently over ceilings, walls, and other big flat surfaces. When you are applying latex paints, then make sure to use roller covers designed with a fiber surface or synthetic “nap”. On the other hand, for oil-based or alkyd home paints, natural or synthetic fiber covers can be used.

The most appropriate size for interior wall painting is 9’’, i.e. 240mm and mini-rollers which should be nearly 3’’ wide are suitable for painting narrow and trim areas. On the other hand, the thickness of standard roller can either be 9’’ or 7 11/2’’.

Paint Sprayers

Paint sprayer is yet another tool for quick and easy coverage of large areas. Other than conventional sprayers, now airless sprayers are in place which will deliver good results and excellent finish.

Paint Pads

Paint pads are used where neither rollers nor brushes can reach; however they are not used for home painting entire walls but for cutting the corners or home painting regions where ceilings and wall meet.

So from priming to painting to walls, there is a whole lot of process that is involved to give a fine makeover to the walls of your home interiors.
